Studio Visit October

"Inspiration is like a breath of fresh air blowing through the convolutions of the brain".

September came and was over in a flash. At least that's how it seemed to me. It was a rich month for me. Above all, I got to know two wonderful people. Annette Golaz taught me how to make three-color cyanotypes at a workshop. She wrote a wonderful book about it, which opened up a whole new world for me.

That's why I spent much more time in my studio than writing in front of the screen.

What is the benefit of being creative?

Inspiration is like a breath of fresh air blowing through the convolutions of the brain; old, stale ideas are blown away and the mind's eye is opened anew.

Creativity keeps the mind moving. Creating something just on a whim exercises the creativity muscle, which we then have at our disposal in a completely different, everyday situation. Creativity frees the mind to think outside the box.

Where does inspiration come from?

The world always remains the same, but there are moments, like the brief flash of a sunbeam, that make everything appear in a new, fresh light. We can't make these moments and we can't drag them out, they are like shy animals that can be attracted with a lot of patience. Often we don't even know what inspiration we are waiting for, but when it arrives, everything is immediately clear. The new idea appears like an old acquaintance, we know: this is it! Inspiration is a gift, perhaps the greatest gift that the human spirit can give.

Millions of years of evolution show up in brief moments that open doors to new dimensions of thinking. We dare to think or do something completely new - and feel infinitely liberated, in a kind of spirit of optimism, because what we just think anew leads to the next, and from there we go on again. We pull on a thread and a little later hold a whole ball of ideas in our hands. It is a great joy to receive such gifts.

Inspiration is a paradox

Inspiration happens in serenity. When I stand in the studio and make an effort, nothing happens. I try this and that, get quite passable results. Then I go out after work, drink a coffee, read the newspaper, go for a walk or go shopping. Then suddenly the ideas start to bubble up, when I am busy with everyday things, when I am doing something completely different. Suddenly there's joy and excitement, the decisive kick.

I then go back to the studio with a completely different feeling and can perhaps experience the happiness of seeing something quite extraordinary come into being. Without the back-breaking work beforehand, the inspiration would not have been possible; the work prepared the terrain. The good ideas don't come out of nowhere, but from the fact that the spirit rises above the back-breaking work, soars above it.

In the studio

This is the colored cyanotype that was created at the workshop with Annette. I am very happy with the picture. In the meantime I have done many tests with different papers and with different concentrations of the dye bath. So I will be in the studio a lot in the near future.
